I keep hearing people talk about “taking sides” in equality issues. But here’s the thing:
Equality law and practice shouldn’t be about choosing sides.
It’s about getting it right. Lawfully, fairly and with integrity.
That means:
🔹 Balance: Giving equal dignity and consideration to all protected groups. Seek the least discriminatory outcome for everyone affected.
🔹 Context: Understanding the real-world setting of each decision or policy. What works in one organisation may not be lawful in another.
🔹 Evidence: Don’t rely on assumptions or headlines. Ask for and weigh up credible, relevant evidence from all perspectives.
🔹 Applying the law: What does the Equality Act actually say? Are you aware of the exceptions? Do any other legal duties apply?
🔹 Objectivity: You’re entitled to your beliefs. But when making decisions in a legal or professional capacity, your duty is to act fairly, lawfully, and without bias.
